Problems with Podkicker Pro on Android 4.4 (Nexus 4)

I have few problems with Podkicker Pro on Nexus 4 with Android 4.4 (Build number KRT16S):
- If the Bluetooth is connected to car audio (Belkin CarAudio Connect AUX with Bluetooth) it starts connecting and disconnecting for about four times when Podkicker start playing. After the forth time the Bluetooth cannot be connecting without restarting the phone.

- After this problem it is not possible to pause the playing. The button keeps changing from pause to play and vice versa but the podcast dose not stop. In order to stop playing I need to force Podkicker to stop.

[Feature request] Each podcast should have it's own child folder

Like it says in the tile...right now podkicker downloads all episodes to the same folder, regardless of what feed they came from. I'd like to see something like

Podkicker Pro (main folder)
   Podcast1
        Episode 1
        Episode 2
        Episode 3
   Podcast2
        Episode 1
        Episode 2
        Episode 3

The each feed folder could contain a small settings file...this would make backing up Podkicker a breeze: just copy the folder and you're done!

Hope you think about this smile

Podkicker sucks: a moody critique.

Today I'm here to tell you that Podkicker sucks.

But, I also hope it will get better. I use Podkicker daily. It is easily one of my top-ten apps, and I've been using it since way way back in the first few weeks it came out. As soon as a pro version came out, I bought in.

Unfortunately, this app that I use very often and enjoy a lot doesn't always live up to my expectations. Today I'm going to explain why.

I don't know much about the Podkicker developer. I do know that this forum and the app reviews are full of misguided users (idiots) who blame Android bugs and design problems on the app because they don't know any better. I also write code and put out products that the public deals with myself, so I'm sympathetic that it is difficult to discern the valid complaints of a user who is having a genuine problem which can be fixed, versus the dribble that more often than not has the editorial glamor of a Youtube comment combined with the intelectual value that only a 4chan noobfag could muster. I also know how little profit apps like this can generate, and how little I paid for the product that I enjoy, versus the amount of time a project like this can take up.

When I first started looking for a podcast app on Android, I looked at Doggcatcher. Unfortuantely, it's user interface was a clusterfuck of confusing bolted-on functionality and Rube Goldberg-like configuration options. It just didn't do what I wanted and made things hard to do, instead of easy to do. Nothing about the user interface layout made intuitive sense. Fortunately, Podkicker soon came out and it basically did what I wanted without the noise. Doggcatcher should be viewed as a warning, not as an example.

I would also like to note that I don't have any complaint regarding the dev's choice to re-design the layout of the application, mix things up, and make fundamental changes. Users will complain when their cheese gets moved, but most of the changes that I've seen may cause individual problems but have over-all lead to a better app when viewed as a whole. Progress needs to get made and some eggs are going to get broken. I am not one of these NIMBY fools who are bitching because of trivial UI changes.

Now then, on with the complaints.

The developer doesn't listen, or isn't committed, or otherwise is over his head. This is the root of all other issues. It's obvious to me that the dev here is over his head in this project and he doesn't know code and Android as well as is needed. I say this understanding the limits of myself and what I suck at, so while heading straight into a personal attack probably ain't going to get me any friends, this is where I feel the truth lies. At the root of all the other issues below, the dev here just ain't cuttin' it. Bugs are rampant, well-known issues are not getting fixed, and new ones get introduced each time a major release happens.

Communication to users isn't good. Well-thought out comments and bug-reports from users go ignored here on the message board. For a long time, there was no changelog. I see that an email address has been added to the app, but I can say that in the past that wasn't true. There is no "HELP" or "SUPPORT" option in the app's menu (though there is some useful stuff buried under Settings/About, which a $5/hour tween business consultant could tell you is NOT where it belongs.)

After the most recent major update, threading has problems. While refreshing the list of podcasts, everything else is dirt-slow. Adding a podcast to the Playlist from the Downloads list will take 5-10 seconds. Opening menus takes multiple seconds before anything happens. Everything slows down. This is on a 4-core new phone.

If new multiple episodes are found on a podcast feed update, Podkicker is hard-coded to only download a limited number of the podcasts. I run into this limitation regularly on multiple Bloomberg news feeds. The first five or seven (or whatever the number is) get automatically downloaded and the rest get ignored. I am sure this was a good idea as a limitation on a bad feed causing a massive runaway download, but it is actually causing problems, I've reported the issue before, and it's still a problem.

0.00B/0-length podcasts are a constant problem. A new episode comes out, Podkicker automatically or manually downloads it, and then it says the size is "0.00B" and when I go to play the podcast it gets streamed instead of played from the local cache. Inspecting the app cache manually via bash shell/ssh shows the the downloaded file is actually there on the filesystem, but something is preventing Podkicker from using it. These episodes can't be listened to when I am on the road or underground and don't have network access. Multiple people have reported the issue here on the forum. Nothing has been fixed.

Display inconsistancy issues: Podcast name not shown on Downloads list, other differences between Podcasts, Episodes, Downloads, and Playlist tabs. If a podcast doesn't have an icon and is added to either the Downloads or Playlist tabs, there is absolutely no way to figure out what podcast feed it comes from.

Poor menu options on Podcasts tab/list: no delete, no ability to view or edit the feed URL manually. When viewing an individual podcast feed, there is no ability to refresh or do ANYTHING at all, because there is no menu.

No ability to kill the app from within the app (no quit option on the menu.) Why would I want this? Because bugs in the app (notably the 0-size download issue) sometimes get fixed when I kill the app and restart it.

How's about all those people trying to get their feed listed in your search feature (which is a very awesome feature BTW): http://www.podkicker.com/forum/topic/13 … ch-engine/
NO REPLY. LINE NOISE. NOBODY HOME. Dev ignores them. I don't know who's fault it is (there are a lot of misformatted feeds out there), but I do know that they didn't get any public replies.

That's it for now. When I get constipated again, I'll come back to bitch some more. Assuming this post doesn't get deleted. Will any good come of this? I doubt it. Most people see criticism as an attack rather than as an opportunity.

Feature request: Continue Reading

Most of my podcasts' show notes get cut off with a "Continue Reading" that was meant by the publisher to be a link, but isn't. I'd like the option while I'm looking at an episode's notes to fetch the rest of the associated post, either within Podkicker or in a browser.

It'd also be nice for the rest of the links to not be stripped out, at least in the full-notes mode.

Feature request: Playback control from the notification area

Hi,

Podkicker Pro is probably my most used Android app so the little things matter. Please make it possible to control (pause/play) podcasts directly from the notification dropdown. The way it works now is that your taken from notification to the app, but it would be faster to be able to control playback directly. This is the one feature Stitcher and Podcast Addict has that I miss in Podkicker Pro.

Hi,

I have posted about this in the past but now I have been through getting Podkicker Pro running on my new Moto X and it took an hour restoring everything like categories, retention and notifications. Would it be complicated to include a config file on the SD care which stores the settings in addition to the podcast itself in from the opml?

What is the difference between the two settings "WiFi only mode" and "WiFi required"? They appear in different sections of the settings but I can not figure out what the difference is.

Hello,

in the past I successfully listened to deutschlandfunk Hintergrund, now they changed their RSS feed and podkicker pro is not able to get information from the the feed: http://www.deutschlandfunk.de/podcast-h … e.podcast. I am subscribed to a couple of other feeds coming from deutschlandfunk without any problems, it is even included in podkicker pro's own search engine. I checked the feed XML with xmllint, no complaints. I use a Moto G with 8GB.

Hi,

I have set Podkicker Pro to refresh every one, but it is not working. It refreshes when I plug it in and when I open it when I set it to, but the hourly refresh does not happen. I'm running Podkicker Pro on a Moto X with Android 4.2.2 on it.

Bug report: Sometime pause doesn't work

System: Nexus 5 w/ Podkicker Pro 1.9.4

Sometimes Podkicker gets into a state where the pause button doesn't work.  I think it may have something to do with switching between the headphone output and bluetooth audio.  If I switch while playing pause stops working.  If I select a different podcast to play, then I can pause.

Delete before complete

If I am listening to podcast and press home and make a phone call the podcast is paused but when I end the call and I return to podkicker the download I was listening to has been deleted as if it was completed. The length of the call was much shorter than remaining time on podcast.

I am using Podkicker Pro 1.9.5 on Samsung S4 i9505 with Android 4.3 the latest update from Samsung.

Podkicker not updating feed PRO

MP3 files downloaded by Podkicker Pro not available for Sonos

Downloaded files from Podkicker Pro are not available in Sonos, which uses the Android Media Scanner to find files on the android device that can be played.

If I copy the files out of the download directory into /storage/emulated/0/Podcasts the files become available. However, if I tell podkicker to download the files to /storage/emulated/0/Podcasts, it puts the files in /storage/emulated/0/Podcasts/Podkicker Download/ and they are apparently not scanned by the Android Media scanner. I looked for a ".nomedia" file to see if Podkicker was telling the Media scanner not to scan this directory but I was unable to find one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Playback halts when playing Plants vs Zombies 2

I just upgraded to Podkicker Pro and the playback pauses when I start playing PVZ2. It didn't happen when I was using the free version and the play resumes as soon as I get out of the PVZ2 app or lock the screen. It doesn't happen with any other apps or games. Anyone know what's going on? Do I need to change the settings?

rss dont work with pro version :-/

hi,

after using the free version for a while i just decided to go pro now.
after backing up my subscriptions i installed pro and already found my subscriptions imported, which was nice.
now i have some subscriptions from one specific host that dont show any content "refresh failure - Not Found"
so i checked in the old version, where they still work just fine.
back to pro i tried to add them manually, but still the same error.

THIS SUCKS! i am quite frustrated...

i dont know if or how i can find the links the app is using, i found the podcasts searching "dradio wissen" and it seems all podcasts of this host are shown in the search, but none of those i tried work and show the error "refresh failure - Not Found" in the pro version while working fine in the free version. the ones importend to me are "DRadio Wissen - Podcast Hörsaal" and "DRadio Wissen - Online Talk".

i like the pro features but there is no point for them without the content i like to have, especially if i can get that with the free version. and since there is no return policy for apps i also would like to use what i payed for.

i hope someone can help me or maybe just try quickly if they work other systems...

thanks for any help
